PHD FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

STUDENTSHIPS AND BURSARIES W
ITHIN RELIGIONS AND THEOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

In Religions and Theology, there are normally 1 or 2 AHRC PhD studentships, and 2 PhD fees bursaries available for those who have applied for the AHRC award but have not received it. Those who wish to apply for a PhD in the area of Jewish Studies are invited to apply for these.

Note that applications for 2011/12 funding opportunities have now closed.

The information for 2011/12 below may be of interest. Information for 2012/13 will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

2011/12 POSTGRADUATE AWARDS (NOW CLOSED)

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Except where indicated, all the awards use the same application process:
1. You need to submit a standard online application form (including references) by 15 February 2011 at the latest. You can do this here. Your referees will also need to submit references directly to the School by this date.
2. You also need to submit a SAHC/AHRC Funding Application Form, along with a Research Proposal to the School PG office (contact details on the form) by 5pm on 1 March 2011.

Current PhD Students: Current PhD students in their first or second year of study (or part-time equivalent) are eligible to apply for the AHRC and School awards. As you already have a place, you only need to complete stage 2 above.

Research Proposal: As part of your Funding Application, you need to submit a 1000-word Research Proposal. Guidance for this can found below.

References: You will also need two references to be submitted by 15 February 2011. There are instructions for referees in the AHRC guidance notes which you can pass these on to your referees, and in a web version here.

You should inform your referees that you are applying for funding. References that do not provide a detailed appraisal of your academic development and suitability for your proposed programme of study, but are simply a general statement of support, may disadvantage even the strongest applicant.

AWARDS AVAILABLE:

AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council): Religions and Theology (1 award)

For UK and EU students, the main funding body is the AHRC. Manchester has been awarded among the highest number of studentships under the AHRC's Block Grant Partnership (BGP) scheme of any UK university. AHRC awards are highly competitive and provide payment of tuition fees and a maintenance stipend for UK students, and tuition fees (and in some cases a maintenance stipend, subject to eligibility criteria) for EU students. The selection of candidates is made by the School, with final confirmation of awards by the AHRC. (Please note: it is possible to apply for an AHRC BGP studentship at more than one institution, but only one nomination per student is permitted; applicants offered a studentship at more than one institution must choose which one to accept before nominations are submitted to the AHRC.)

School-wide Awards

In addition to the Research Council funding and the Faculty awards, there are School-wide competitions for several studentships and bursaries, and each Subject Area in the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures offers a number of bursaries. These School awards come with the opportunity to teach or assist in research-related activities.

The bursaries are open to both Home/EU and Overseas students. In the case of fee bursaries, the bursary is set at the level of Home/EU Fees for the relevant programme. Please note that for Overseas students, any fees bursary awarded would reduce the tuition fee payable by the equivalent amount of the Home/EU fees. The awards are for three years full time or six years part time (subject to satisfactory progress) for new starters, reduced pro rata for existing students.

University Research Scholar Awards

Two PhD studentships, offering a contribution to fees set at the relevant Home/EU level for the programme, together with a £5000 contribution towards maintenance. Open to Home and Overseas students.

Overseas Research Student (ORS) Awards

Although the UK Government scheme has now finished, the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures has introduced its own scheme to replace it. The School offers up to two awards, paying the difference between Overseas fees and Home/EU fees, to PhD candidates of exceptional merit. Students will also automatically be entered into the competition for the other internal bursaries offered by the relevant subject areas within the School. In most cases, these consist of Home fees awards; therefore a student successful in both the ORS competition and a subject area award would receive a fee award for the full overseas fees.

Subject Area Awards: Religions & Theology

Two PhD fee bursaries

STUDENTSHIPS AND BURSARIES WITHIN MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
