Origins of Aramaean Christianity. Professor Emeritus John Healey FBA gave a paper entitled "'Aramaeans' and Aramaic in Transition: Western Influences and the Roots of Aramaean Christianity" at a conference held under the aegis of The Minerva Center for the Relations between Israel and Aram in Biblical Times in Leipzig, 6-9 June 2016. Minerva Centers are sponsored by the Max Planck Gesellschaft/Minerva Stiftung and one of the aims is to foster academic links between Germany and Israel. Further information.

Bernard Jackson student prize 2016

Post-graduate prize. This prize is awarded annually to the student with 'the highest grade for a master's dissertation in Jewish Studies' at the University of Manchester. It honours the Centre's second co-director Bernard Jackson. For 2016 the prize of £100 was awarded to the winner Miruna-Stefana Belea (MA in Biblical Studies) for a dissertation supervised by Renate Smithuis and entitled 'Magic and Religion: Parabiblical elements on four amulets from Moses Gaster collection'. The Guardian day conference

Call for papers for day-conference "The Guardian in Local, National, and Global History", Thu 6 April 2017, Manchester. The University of Manchester Library and the John Rylands Research Institute invite submissions for a one-day interdisciplinary conference on the history of the Guardian newspaper. Potential topics for papers might include Zionism, the development of foreign correspondence and coverage of foreign policy and international news, and the role of the Guardian in Manchester life, including that of its minority communities. Format: 20 minutes for presentation (with an expectation of an additional 10 minutes for questions). Application: Please submit abstracts of up to 250 words to fran.baker@manchester.ac.uk.
