Jeremy Michelson, 'The Holoacaust - A World Tragedy' . 7 Mondays from 7:30pm - 9:30pm, starting 22nd January 2007 in the Manchester Jewish Museum, 190 Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester.

This course will introduce the student to the main events of the Holocaust. We will examine the reasons for it, the logic behind it and the reactions to it by the victims, the Allies and the bystanders. Topics will include:

* Racial anti-semitism and the rise of Hitler. The ideological root of Nazi anti-semitism.
* Nazi anti-Jewish actions 1933-39. Jewish reactions to the persecution.
* The Final Solution 1939-45. How inevitable was it? German conquest, ghettoisation, killing squads, gas chambers.
* Moral dilemmas posed by the Holocaust.
* Resistance during the Holocaust.
* Rescuers and bystanders* Making sense of the Holocaust.
